Programme Aims

This programme provides learners with the opportunity to understand English language teaching through a balanced application of theory and practical skills. It ensures all graduates achieve the following five core competencies:

(i) Competency 1 (C1): Curriculum & Instructional Design
  • Equip learners to design and implement effective, innovative ESL curricula using needs analysis, task-based learning, and differentiated instruction to create positive, inclusive learning environments.
  • Develop expertise in curriculum development, lesson planning, and instructional design for diverse learners.
(ii) Competency 2 (C2): Engaging Lesson Planning
  • Design engaging lesson plans using stories, games, and multisensory activities (adapted from various materials as needed) to capture all learners’ attention, stimulate imagination, and encourage active participation.
  • Develop dynamic lesson planning skills that incorporate varied teaching methodologies, including technology-enhanced and differentiated instruction.
(iii) Competency 3 (C3): Effective Lesson Delivery
  • Conduct English lessons that alternate between presenting linguistic concepts and encouraging interaction (questioning, rebuttal), accommodating any disabilities, to foster constructive participation and language retention.
  • Foster a deep understanding of andragogy and pedagogy and its application in TESOL.
(iv) Competency 4 (C4): Critical Analysis & Communication
  • Guide the analysis of original texts using close reading, group discussions, and presentations to reveal nuances of meaning and style, developing learners’ critical thinking, analytical skills, and ability to communicate complex ideas.
  • Cultivate critical thinking and analysis skills in both educators and learners.
(v) Competency 5 (C5): Assessment & Feedback
  • Assess student learning using adaptable evaluation tools (e.g., questionnaires, projects, self-assessments) to measure English comprehension levels (aligned with CEFR) and provide targeted, actionable feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of assessment principles and practices in TESOL.

Learning Outcomes:

This programme enables learners to understand English language teaching through the connection of theory and practice. Upon completion, graduates will be able to:

Competency 1: Curriculum Design
  • C.1.1: Design TESOL curricula aligned with learner needs, outcomes, and language teaching best practices.
  • C.1.2: Develop TESOL curricula for specific learner populations, accounting for diverse needs and learning styles.
  • C.1.3: Design and implement action research projects to investigate and improve TESOL curricula and teaching practices.
Competency 2: Dynamic Lesson Planning
  • C.2.1: Create engaging and effective lesson plans incorporating a variety of teaching methodologies.
  • C.2.2: Design technology-enhanced lessons.
  • C.2.3: Develop lesson plans that integrate project-based learning and promote learner autonomy.
Competency 3: Andragogy and Pedagogy Integration
  • C.3.1: Lead English lessons that demonstrate effective application of andragogical principles.
  • C.3.2: Apply differentiated instruction strategies to meet the diverse needs of learners.
  • C.3.3: Explore technology’s role in fostering learner autonomy across various learning environments.
Competency 4: Cultivating Critical Thinkers
  • C.4.1: Guide the analysis of original texts to reveal nuances of meaning and style.
    C.4.2: Guide learners in critically analysing and evaluating information sources.
  • C.4.3: Develop strategies for promoting critical thinking in an online learning environment.
Competency 5: Principles and Practices in TESOL Assessment
  • C.5.1: Assess student learning using a variety of assessment tools.
  • C.5.2: Develop and use rubrics for assessing student work.
  • C.5.3: Use assessment data to inform and improve TESOL programmes.

Assessment Structure:

This programme is designed to build upon learners’ prior qualifications and teaching experience, ensuring a relevant and progressive educational journey.

The rigorous and dynamic curriculum of the Enseigner l’Anglais Langue Étrangère (TESOL) programme—or RS TESOL—is designed to provide mastery of the academic disciplines and applied functional areas critical for success in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

The programme consists of 5 taught core modules:

  • Innovative ESL Curriculum Design
  • Dynamic Lesson Planning
  • TESOL Andragogy and Pedagogy Integration
  • Cultivating Critical Thinkers in TESOL
  • Principles and Practices in TESOL Assessment

Each module is an immersive experience through which learners explore innovative ideas, develop their own thinking, and build specific competency blocks.

The RS TESOL programme is available to all qualified candidates aiming for the following award:

(i) Enseigner l’Anglais Langue Étrangère (TESOL)

Entry Requirements:

Admission is based on evidence that an applicant can fulfil, benefit from, and achieve the standards of the programme. Key assessment criteria include language proficiency, relevant working experience, and academic or professional qualifications.

Admission Assessment

Admission is conducted in two stages:
(i) Assessment of the candidate’s alignment with the programme through a motivation letter and acceptance of entry requirements.
(ii) An interview with the candidate.

Entry Requirements

  • The Enseigner l’Anglais Langue Étrangère (TESOL) programme is intended for teachers or trainers who meet one of the following prerequisites:
  • Hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent (Level 6) in education, pedagogy, or English; or
  • Hold a Level 6 Professional Diploma in TESOL from the London Examinations Board; or
  •  Hold a bachelor’s degree in any field taught in English, plus one year of teaching experience. Without this experience, a one-year teaching internship (online or offline) must be undertaken at the start of the programme.
  • Applicants must be native English speakers or have a minimum B1 level at the programme start (certified by a standardised test) and must provide proof of C1 level for admission into the End Point Assessment.

Additional Notes

  • A recognised qualification is one awarded by an institution accredited or recognised by the relevant national authority.
  • English proficiency can be demonstrated via a recognised test score, a qualification (EQF Level 2 or above) examined in English, or an undergraduate/professional qualification taught and assessed in English.
  • Relevant working experience includes teaching or managing TESOL.
  • Applicants unable to provide the above proof of English may take the LEB SELT test. Passing at B2 level satisfies the language requirement. Please contact IBES for details.

Mode of Study:

The Enseigner l’Anglais Langue Étrangère (TESOL) programme is delivered online to accommodate working professionals balancing work, travel, and family commitments. This approach adheres to adult learning principles, connecting content to learners’ experiences and emphasizing real-world application of TESOL competencies.

Programme Delivery

The delivery method consists of the following key elements:

(i) Self-Paced Learning (Independent Study)

  • Learners receive a detailed Self-Instructional Module (SIM) available online to facilitate independent learning.
  • The SIM includes learning activities for online and face-to-face discussion, a study guide with task instructions, a competency activity timetable, and assignment/examination deadlines.
  • Additional multimedia resources (video/audio clips, simulations) are provided to offer varied perspectives and supplement reading materials.

(ii) Online Interaction

  • Discussion forums on the online learning platform enable peer interaction.
  • Learners join a course community to:
    Discuss and share ideas about learning activities.
  • Collaborate on assignments and projects.
  • The Module Leader provides 8 hours of online support via forums and may deliver live lectures.

(iii) On-Campus, Face-to-Face Delivery

  • The programme includes face-to-face lectures and small group tutorials.
  • Learners maintain access to all online learning materials throughout.
